Battle of the Pole Dance Studios was something I had come up with back in 2010. I can tell exactly what I was doing when the idea hit me. It was the last day of the very first Pole Convention, I was in the audience. I was watching the Studio performances. I was blown away by how much talent that was there showing off what their studio had to offer. From there, the thoughts starting running through my head. First was this whole battle idea, based on the Battle of the Bands format. And for some crazy reason, an idea of a drumline group came to my head as well. Then the gears were further turning. I thought of various ideas, locations, everything that comes with running an event. Thats when I knew I could pull this event off. The area I live in is very populated with pole dancing, theres great talent and fantastic studios - why not show off what this area has to offer.
The breakdown of the event is like this. Local pole studios from the Maryland, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania areas will perform in front of a live audience. There will be judges looking at each performance. The studios will be able to take home a Team Superlative and a prize for their studio. Last years titles included Team Trixter, Best Costumes, Team Congeniality and a Best Overall category. I didn't want to make this a competition, more of a celebration of pole dancing in this area. Some polers don't want to compete but are just happy performing in front of others instead. There aren't a lot of options when it comes performing in this area.
I also wanted to make the event a charity event. The inaugural event I chose to find a breast cancer group to support. I also had chose the date to be in October to tie in perfectly with Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer is something very close to me as well. In my opinion I had to choose a charity that spoke to me, thats how I knew I would be able to give my all to make this event a success. The recipient of last years donation was The Red Devils - a non profit support group in Towson, MD who help women and their families dealing with breast cancer. Last year we were able to raise $300 for The Red Devils.
This year I had decided to choose a different charity to support, this year I dug deeper and found and charity that was even closer to my heart. It affects me personally. This year I chose PCOS Challenge PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and PCOS Challenge helps raise awareness of PCOS to the public, medical community through various media mediums. From their Radio show and PCOS Challenge TV program that runs on their website. I was diagnosed with PCOS in June of this year and I felt so alone with my diagnosis and I knew there had to be other women who felt this way. Those are the women I wanted to help. No woman should ever have to feel lost in the way their body feels.
This years event will be held on November 12th 2011. We have moved from Baltimore last year to the Nations Capital this year. We will be performing at The District Nightclub in the Adams Morgan area of DC. This year looks like a fantastic turnout and great talent in this area as well. Pole Pressure of DC is back to defend their Best Overall title they won last year. A special guest judge will be there to perform as well.
For those still interested in learning more about the event, please take the time and visit the website at www.battlepole.com. From there you can buy your tickets, learn more about the event and contact me if you have any questions.
Stayed tuned for the entry for after the event!
